Microwave Wind Direction Retrieval over Antarctica
نویسندگان
چکیده
Over large regions of Antarctica, ice sheet and bedrock topography and the snow deposition, drift, and erosional environment combine to produce roughness on various scales. The roughness influences the microwave backscattering and emission properties of the surface, introducing azimuth-angle dependencies in the satellite observation data. In this paper we explore the use of data from SeaWinds on Quikscat, NSCAT, ERS AMI scatterometer mode, and SSMn to study surface roughness effects in Antarctica. A simple empirical model for the azimuth variation in the radar backscatter is developed. Azimuthal variations in the data are highly correlated with the direction of the katabatic wind flow.

An Improved Local Gradient Method for Sea Surface Wind Direction Retrieval from SAR Imagery
Sea surface wind affects the fluxes of energy, mass and momentum between the atmosphere and ocean, and therefore regional and global weather and climate. With various satellite microwave sensors, sea surface wind can be measured with large spatial coverage in almost all-weather conditions, day or night. Like any other remote sensing measurements, sea surface wind measurement is also indirect. T...
متن کاملAzimuth variation in microwave scatterometer and radiometer data over Antarctica
While designed for ocean observation, scatterometer and radiometer data have proven very useful in a variety of cryosphere studies. Over large regions of Antarctica, ice sheet and bedrock topography and the snow deposition, drift, and erosional environment combine to produce roughness on various scales. Roughness ranges from broad, basin scale ice-sheet topography at 100 km wavelengths, to larg...
متن کاملAirborne Measurements of Oceanic Wind Vector Fields Over the Labrador Sea Using Passive Polarimetric Radiometry
The focus of this research is to develop algorithms and aircraft and satellite remote sensing systems for imaging of ocean surface winds using passive microwave radiometers. The application of passive radiometry to ocean surface imaging, specifically using polarimetric microwave measurements of the third and fourth Stokes' parameters, has been identified as a potentially useful and low-cost mea...
متن کاملThe potential of QuikSCAT and WindSat observations for the estimation of sea surface wind vector under severe weather conditions
The physics of remote sensing sea surface measurements is still poorly understood under severe weather conditions. Wind vector algorithms are usually developed for non-precipitating atmospheres and for wind speeds less than 20 m/s. In this study, we analyze observations from the QuikSCAT Kuband scatterometer collocated with the WindSat full polarimetric microwave radiometer to estimate the pote...
متن کاملCombined Active and Passive Microwave Sensing of Ocean Surface Wind Vector from TRMM
This paper presents a new ocean wind vector measurement technique that uses the combined passive and active microwave measurements respectively from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) and the Precipitation Radar (PR). The wind speed is inferred by TMI over a wide swath that includes the narrower PR swath. The PR scans cross-track ± 18°; and near the swath edge...
